How to convert celsius to fahrenheit
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32
Example: 25 °C = 25 × 9/5 + 32 = 77 °F
To convert back (fahrenheit to celsius): °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
What is a celsius?
Celsius (°C) is a scale of temperature where 0 is the freezing point of water and 100 is the boiling point at standard atmospheric pressure. It is part of the SI system and used by most of the world for everyday temperature measurement.
What is a fahrenheit?
Fahrenheit (°F) is a scale of temperature where 32 is the freezing point of water and 212 is the boiling point. It is the standard temperature scale in the United States and a few other countries.
When do you need to convert celsius to fahrenheit?
Weather is the most common reason people convert Celsius to Fahrenheit. Travelers from the US visiting Europe, Canada, or Asia see forecasts in °C and need °F to know what to wear (a European 30 °C forecast = 86 °F, "hot but not extreme"; a 5 °C forecast = 41 °F, "jacket weather").
Cooking and baking uses both scales, especially for older American recipes with Fahrenheit oven temperatures that need to be converted to °C for modern European or Asian ovens, or vice versa. A 350 °F oven = 176.67 °C; 180 °C = 356 °F. Off by even 10 °F can ruin a bake.
Body temperature and medical context is the other large use case. Normal body temp is 37 °C = 98.6 °F. A fever is 38 °C = 100.4 °F; a high fever is 40 °C = 104 °F. Converting wrong on a thermometer reading during illness can lead to bad decisions about when to see a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
What is 0 °C in Fahrenheit?
0 °C = 32 °F, the freezing point of water. This is the one anchor point that is exact by definition: 0 °C and 32 °F are both defined as the freezing point of water at standard atmospheric pressure, so the conversion is exact.
What is 100 °C in Fahrenheit?
100 °C = 212 °F, the boiling point of water. Like 0 °C / 32 °F, this is the second anchor point and is exact by definition. Between them, the scale difference is 180 °F (212 − 32) over 100 °C, giving the 9/5 = 1.8 ratio in the conversion formula.
Why does the formula have a +32 and ×9/5 instead of just multiplying?
Because the two scales do not share a zero point. 0 °C = 32 °F, not 0 °F. So a direct multiplication would give 0 °C → 0 °F, which is wrong by 32 °F. The +32 adjusts for the offset zero, and the ×9/5 (or 1.8) adjusts for the different scale size. The reverse formula subtracts 32 first to undo the offset, then multiplies by 5/9 to undo the scale conversion.
Is there a quick mental conversion?
Doubling and adding 30 is a rough shortcut: 20 °C × 2 + 30 = 70 °F (actual: 68). For higher accuracy, double and add 10% then add 32: 20 × 2 = 40; 40 × 1.1 = 44; 44 + 32 = 76 (still off, but closer). The exact formula is fast with a calculator or just use the table.
