Data rates come in two flavors: bits per second (used in networking and ISP marketing) and bytes per second (used in file transfer and download managers). 1 byte = 8 bits. Within each flavor, the SI decimal prefixes apply: 1 kbit/s = 1,000 bit/s, 1 Mbit/s = 1,000 kbit/s, and so on.

This converter uses bit/s as the base and handles all the common combinations.

    A lowercase "b" means bits (kbit/s); an uppercase "B" means bytes (kB/s). The factor is 8 between them.
