What Typing Speed Actually Measures (and What It Does Not)
Words per minute is the most common typing speed metric, but it is not what you think. Here is what WPM actually counts, why 5-characters-per-word is the convention, what "net WPM" vs "gross WPM" means, why your accuracy matters more than your speed past a certain point, and how to actually get faster.
WPM (words per minute) is the most common typing speed metric. The standard convention is 5 characters = 1 word, including spaces. So 250 WPM means typing 1,250 characters per minute, which is about 250 average-length words per minute. Accuracy matters as much as speed past about 60 WPM: typing 80 WPM with 5% errors produces fewer correct characters than 60 WPM with 1% errors. You finished a typing test at 87 WPM with 96% accuracy. Is that good? Is that fast? Is that what you think it is? The answer to all three depends on what WPM is actually measuring, and the answer is more subtle than the test lets on.
What WPM counts
Words per minute is the standard typing speed metric, but the definition of "word" is not what you think. The convention, dating back to typing tests in the 1940s and formalized in international standards, is that one word is five characters. The characters include letters, numbers, punctuation, and spaces. So "the cat sat" is 11 characters, which is 2.2 words by the standard convention.
The reason for this convention is historical. The first typing tests measured operator productivity on typewriters, where the relevant output was five characters per word on average. The convention stuck, and modern typing tests use the same definition. When you see "WPM" on a test, the formula is almost always:
WPM = (characters_typed / 5) / minutes_elapsed
So 250 WPM means typing 1,250 characters per minute, which is about 250 average-length English words per minute. For a "words per minute" metric, the number is a bit misleading — most people think of WPM as actual English words, not 5-character chunks.
Gross WPM vs net WPM
Most typing tests report two numbers: gross WPM and net WPM. The difference is the error penalty. The standard formula, from international typing test conventions, is:
net WPM = (gross WPM) - (uncorrected_errors / minutes_elapsed)
So if you type at 100 WPM gross with 10 uncorrected errors in 1 minute, your net WPM is 90. The errors are subtracted from the score because in real work, errors require correction, which costs time. Typing fast and then fixing the mistakes is not actually faster than typing slowly and accurately.
The exact penalty varies by test. Some tests subtract 1 WPM per error, others use the standard formula above, and some use a more aggressive penalty. The Typing Test shows both gross and net (or accuracy-adjusted) figures so you can see the impact of errors on your real speed.
Why 5 characters per word is the convention
English words average 4.5-5 characters including the space after them. The "5 characters = 1 word" convention is a rough approximation, but it is close enough to be useful. The exact average depends on the source text: technical writing averages longer, conversational writing averages shorter. But 5 is good enough for typing tests.
The convention is not perfect. "I" is one character but counts as 1 word. "Antidisestablishmentarianism" is 28 characters and counts as 5.6 words. The convention treats them the same, which means a typing test on technical text will report a higher WPM than the same test on conversational text, even at the same actual typing speed.
Some modern tests use a different formula: words per minute based on the actual word count of the test text. This is more accurate but less comparable across tests. The 5-character convention is the international standard, and most tests use it for comparability.
What your WPM actually means
For a typical adult who has not done a typing test, the average WPM is 40. For a fast typist, 60-80. For a professional (secretary, transcriptionist, programmer), 80-120. The world record is around 200 WPM, achieved by specialists who have trained for years.
But WPM is not a direct measure of productivity. A typist at 100 WPM with 95% accuracy produces about 95 correct words per minute. A typist at 60 WPM with 99% accuracy produces about 59 correct words per minute. The 100 WPM typist is about 60% more productive, even with the higher error rate. The 60 WPM typist is more accurate per character but produces fewer correct characters overall.
The break-even point is around 98-99% accuracy. Below that, slowing down to improve accuracy produces more correct characters. Above that, the accuracy is high enough that further improvement has diminishing returns and the limiting factor is speed.
What accuracy means
Accuracy is the percentage of characters typed correctly. A 95% accuracy means 5% of characters are wrong (typos). For a 60 WPM typist, that is 3 errors per minute. For a 100 WPM typist, that is 5 errors per minute.
The cost of an error depends on what you are typing. For a chat message, an error is a minor annoyance — the reader can usually figure out what you meant. For code, an error is a syntax error that breaks compilation. For a legal document, an error is a typo that has to be fixed before submission. For a transcription, an error is a wrong word in the record.
The threshold for "good enough" accuracy depends on the use case. For casual writing, 95% is fine. For professional writing, 99% is the standard. For programming, 99.9% is the goal (a single typo can break the build).
Why accuracy matters more than speed past a certain point
For typing speed, there is a clear ceiling where more speed does not help. The ceiling is the point where the time saved by typing faster is less than the time spent fixing errors. For most people, this is around 60-80 WPM with 99% accuracy.
Beyond that point, additional speed is wasted. You type faster, make more errors, spend more time fixing the errors, and end up with the same number of correct characters per minute (or fewer). The optimal speed is the one that maximizes correct characters per minute, which is a function of both typing speed and accuracy.
For most uses, this is around 60-80 WPM. For professional uses, higher speeds help, but the speed has to come with high accuracy. A 100 WPM typist with 95% accuracy is not as productive as a 70 WPM typist with 99% accuracy, even though the 100 WPM figure looks more impressive.
What does not matter for typing speed
Hand position matters less than you think. The "home row" technique is helpful for new typists, but experienced typists develop their own hand positions. The QWERTY layout is the most common but is not the most efficient — Dvorak and Colemak are alternative layouts that claim to be faster, but the difference is small in practice.
Keyboard type matters more than layout. Mechanical keyboards with low actuation force are faster than membrane keyboards. But the difference is in the low single digits of WPM, not the 20+ WPM differences between typists.
Touch typing (typing without looking at the keys) is a significant advantage, but most people can touch type at 30-40 WPM with practice, and the speed difference between touch typing and hunt-and-peck is mostly the difference between 40 WPM and 80 WPM. The jump from 40 to 80 comes from practice, not from any specific technique.
How to actually get faster
Most typing improvement comes from one thing: deliberate practice. The pattern is the same as any other skill:
- Find your current baseline. Take a 1-minute test, look at your WPM and accuracy.
- Identify the weak point. Is it speed (low WPM) or accuracy (low accuracy)? The fix is different.
- If speed is the limit, type slightly faster than comfortable, with the same accuracy. The speed will feel wrong at first but accuracy will hold.
- If accuracy is the limit, slow down until the accuracy is 99% or better, then practice at that speed. Speed will come back as accuracy becomes automatic.
- Take a test every week or two. Track the trend. Improvement is slow but real.
The biggest mistake is practicing at the wrong speed. If you practice at a speed where you make lots of errors, you are training the wrong pattern. If you practice at a speed where you make no errors, you are not training anything. The sweet spot is the speed where you make 1-2% errors, which is the threshold where the pattern is being learned but the errors are visible.
The honest answer to "is 87 WPM good"
87 WPM with 96% accuracy is fast for a casual user and slow for a professional. The actual answer depends on what you are doing with it. For a chat or email, 87 WPM is plenty. For programming, 87 WPM is below the median for senior engineers (who average around 90-100 WPM with 98-99% accuracy). For a transcriptionist, 87 WPM is on the low end (professional transcriptionists average 100-120 WPM).
The number that matters is not WPM but the combination of WPM and accuracy. A typist at 87 WPM with 99% accuracy is more productive than a typist at 100 WPM with 95% accuracy. The 87 WPM figure is fine; the 96% accuracy is the more important number to improve.
