What a horsepower is
One mechanical horsepower (hp, hp(I)) = 745.6998715822702 watts, defined as the power required to lift 550 pounds by one foot in one second.
The unit was invented by James Watt in the 1780s to sell steam engines. The story is that he observed working horses at a mill and estimated that a horse could turn a mill wheel 144 times per hour, walking in a 24-foot circle. Boats and small aircraft

Why the unit has lasted 240 years
