How to Calculate BMI the Right Way (and What It Actually Means)

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of their height in meters. The four standard categories are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5-24.9 normal, 25-29.9 overweight, 30 and above obese. The number is a population-level screening tool, not a diagnosis — it does not distinguish muscle from fat, does not account for bone density or ethnic variation, and should be paired with waist circumference, blood markers, and a clinician's view for any individual decision. BMI is the most widely used body-composition metric on the planet, and also one of the most criticized. Both are true. The formula
BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. The metric formula is:
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²
For imperial units, the formula is weight in pounds times 703, divided by height in inches squared:
BMI = (weight (lb) × 703) / height (in)²
Quick mental model: for an average-height adult, every 5 pounds of weight changes BMI by about one point. For an average-weight adult, every inch of height changes BMI by about half a point. The math is simple and the whole calculation runs in a browser without any backend.
The four standard categories
BMI maps to four standard categories, defined by the World Health Organization and used by most national health agencies:
- Under 18.5 — Underweight. May indicate insufficient caloric intake, a fast metabolism, an underlying condition, or simply a smaller frame. Worth discussing with a clinician if unintentional.
- 18.5 to 24.9 — Normal weight. The statistical middle. Note: this is the range where the largest number of long-lived adults land, but the range is wide, and being inside it does not by itself predict health.
- 25.0 to 29.9 — Overweight. The same caveat as above. Many athletic adults with high muscle mass fall in this band and are not at health risk.
- 30.0 and above — Obese. A stronger statistical signal of elevated health risk, particularly for cardiovascular and metabolic conditions. Worth a clinical conversation.
Some agencies further split the 30+ band into classes I, II, and III at 35 and 40. The four-band model is the most common and is enough for most use cases.
Worked example
A person who is 1.75 m tall and weighs 70 kg has a BMI of:
70 / (1.75 × 1.75) = 70 / 3.0625 = 22.86
That is in the normal band. The same person, weight 85 kg:
85 / 3.0625 = 27.76
That puts them in the overweight band. The shift from 70 to 85 kg moved them across one category boundary. This is what most people mean when they say "BMI does not feel right" — a 15 kg swing that crosses a category boundary may not feel like a categorical change in body composition, and for many individuals it is not.
What BMI does not measure
BMI is a ratio of total mass to total height. It cannot tell the difference between muscle, fat, bone, and water. The known limitations are:
- Muscle vs. fat. A lean athlete at 1.80 m and 90 kg of muscle can have a BMI of 27.8, in the overweight band, while carrying single-digit body fat. The BMI says "overweight"; the mirror and the body-fat caliper say "athletic".
- Body fat distribution. Two people with the same BMI can have radically different health risk profiles depending on where the fat sits. Visceral (abdominal) fat is a much stronger risk factor than subcutaneous fat. Waist circumference is a much better proxy for this than BMI.
- Ethnic variation. The same BMI maps to different health risk levels across ethnic groups. Several Asian health agencies use lower cutoffs (23 for overweight, 27.5 for obese) because the metabolic risk rises at lower BMIs in those populations.
- Age and sex. Women and older adults tend to carry more fat at the same BMI. The cutoff bands were not stratified for these, so the same number can mean different things for different people.
- Children and adolescents. The standard BMI cutoffs do not apply to growing kids. Pediatric BMI is expressed as a percentile against age- and sex-specific growth charts.
None of this makes BMI useless. It makes BMI a single number, not a verdict.
What to use alongside BMI
For any individual decision, BMI is one of four numbers that together give a much clearer picture:
- Waist circumference. Measure at the navel, after a normal exhale. Above 102 cm (40 in) for men or 88 cm (35 in) for women is a stronger cardiovascular risk signal than the BMI category alone.
- Waist-to-hip ratio. Waist divided by hip. Above 0.90 for men or 0.85 for women is a further flag for visceral fat distribution.
- Body fat percentage. From a caliper, a smart scale, or a DEXA scan. A healthy range is roughly 10-20% for men and 18-28% for women; the exact number depends on age and training status.
- Blood markers. Blood pressure, fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipid panel. These are the actual risk factors; the body composition numbers are proxies.
If a person has a "normal" BMI but a 110 cm waist, elevated blood pressure, and a poor lipid panel, the BMI is the wrong number to fixate on. Conversely, a person with a BMI of 27 from muscle and a clean blood panel and a normal waist is not in a health-risk category regardless of what the formula says.
How to use the number without uploading your data

A short checklist for using the number well
- Calculate the BMI. Use the four-band model as a starting point, not a verdict.
- Measure your waist at the navel. If it is above the 102/88 thresholds, treat the waist as the more important number.
- Consider body fat percentage if you train. If it is in the 10-20% / 18-28% bands, the BMI category can usually be ignored.
- Look at blood markers annually. These are the actual risk factors.
- If the numbers say one thing and you feel fine, trust the data. If the numbers say one thing and you feel unwell, talk to a clinician.
BMI is a useful first pass and a poor final answer. Treat it as a starting point for a conversation, not the conversation itself.
