Privacy: Your keystrokes and timing are processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.

## About

Practice your typing speed with curated passages from classic literature. The timer starts on your first keystroke; the score (WPM, accuracy, time, errors) updates live as you type. The result uses the industry-standard 5-characters-per-word convention, so 50 correctly-typed characters in 60 seconds scores 10 WPM.

Everything runs in your browser. Your keystrokes and timing are not sent to a server, not logged, and not stored. The score is yours to keep; the prompt bank is built in.

## How to use

1. **Read the prompt** — A passage from a famous novel or essay appears. Take a moment to scan it.
2. **Start typing** — The timer starts on your first keystroke. Type at your natural pace.
3. **Read the score** — WPM, accuracy, elapsed time, and error count update live as you type.
4. **Try another** — Click "New prompt" for a different passage, or try to beat your previous score on the same one.

## Examples

### A typical session

A 60-second test with 95% accuracy on a 300-character passage.

Output:

```
About 57 WPM with 5 errors. Average adult typing speed is 40 WPM; 60+ is considered fast.
```

### What good looks like

WPM benchmarks for different roles.

Output:

```
Casual user: 30-40 WPM. Office worker: 50-60 WPM. Programmer: 70-90 WPM. Professional typist: 100+ WPM.
```

## FAQ

### How is WPM calculated?

WPM uses the industry-standard 5-characters-per-word convention. The score is `(correctly typed characters / 5) / minutes`. Incorrect keystrokes do not inflate the score — only the characters that match the prompt count.

### How is accuracy calculated?

Accuracy is `correct keystrokes / total keystrokes`. Backspace corrections count as keystrokes, so they slightly lower the accuracy percentage even when you fix the error. This is the same convention used by most popular typing-test sites.

### Does the timer start automatically?

Yes — the timer starts on your first keystroke. The first keystroke is the "go" signal, and the test ends when you have typed the entire prompt correctly. No manual start or stop button needed.

### Are my keystrokes uploaded?

No. The whole test runs in JavaScript in the page. Your keystrokes, timing, and score never leave your device. There is no server log, no analytics on what you typed, and no account required.
