## About

The Luhn algorithm (a simple modulo-10 checksum) is what catches typos in card numbers before they hit the payment processor. Every well-formed card number passes it; a single mistyped digit fails.

This tool validates the Luhn checksum, identifies the card scheme from the Issuer Identification Number (the first 6 digits), checks the length against what each scheme allows, and produces a display-safe mask for receipts and logs. Everything runs in your browser — no upload, no third-party API.

## How to use

1. **Paste or type a card number** — Dashes and spaces are fine; they are stripped before validation.
2. **Read the verdict** — A green badge means it passes both the Luhn checksum and the length check for the detected scheme.
3. **Copy the masked display** — Use the BIN •••• last 4 mask for any UI that shows the card back to a user.

## FAQ

### Is this safe to use with real card numbers?

Yes. The validation runs entirely in your browser — your card number never leaves your device. There is no analytics, no logging, no third-party API call.

### Does a passing Luhn check mean the card is real?

No. Luhn only verifies the digit pattern is well-formed. A real card requires an active account with the issuer. This tool catches typos, not fraud.

### Why does it identify the card scheme?

Each card network has a unique Issuer Identification Number (IIN) prefix — Visa starts with 4, Mastercard with 51-55 or 222-272, Amex with 34 or 37, etc. The first 6 digits are enough to identify the network reliably.
