## About

Ideal body weight (IBW) is a clinical estimate based on height and sex. Four formulas are commonly used: Devine (1974, the standard for drug dosing), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983), and Hamwi (1964). This tool shows all four plus the simple mean, and a BMI-based healthy range for comparison.

Ideal body weight formulas are most useful as a reference point. They were derived from actuarial tables of height and weight in healthy adults and are not a target for everyone. Use them alongside body composition, lifestyle, and your own health data.

## How to use

1. **Pick your sex** — The base weights differ for men and women.
2. **Enter your height** — In feet and inches.
3. **Read the results** — See all four formulas, the average, and the healthy BMI range.

## Examples

### Male, 5'10"

Devine formula: 50 + 2.3 × 10 = 73 kg.

Output:

```
Devine 73.0 kg, Robinson 71.0 kg, Miller 70.3 kg, Hamwi 75.0 kg
```

## FAQ

### Which formula is the most accurate?

None of them. The formulas were derived from mid-20th-century population data and assume a specific frame size. Use them as a range, not a single target. For most purposes, the mean of the four (or the healthy BMI range) is more useful than any single formula.

### Why do the formulas give different answers?

They were derived from different populations using different statistical methods. Devine was built for drug dosing (a conservative estimate). Robinson and Miller revised Devine using broader data. Hamwi is the oldest. The spread is usually 5-10 kg.

### Is ideal body weight the same as a healthy weight?

Not exactly. IBW is a single point estimate from a formula. The healthy weight range (BMI 18.5–24.9) is a range of weights associated with the lowest health risk in population studies. The BMI range is usually more useful as a target.
