## About

The U.S. Navy method estimates body fat percentage from a few circumference measurements — height, neck, waist, and (for women) hip. It correlates reasonably well with DEXA scans for most adults and only needs a tape measure.

Enter your measurements in inches, your weight in pounds, and the calculator returns your body fat percentage, the category, the equivalent fat mass, and the equivalent lean mass.

## How to use

1. **Pick your sex** — The formula differs for men and women.
2. **Measure** — Neck (just below the larynx), waist (at the navel for men, narrowest point for women), hip (women, widest point).
3. **Read the result** — See your body fat %, the category, fat mass, and lean mass.

## Examples

### Male, 5'10", 170 lb, neck 15", waist 34"

Typical office worker, light training.

Output:

```
~19% body fat, fitness category
```

### Female, 5'6", 140 lb, neck 13", waist 28", hip 36"

Active adult.

Output:

```
~24% body fat, fitness category
```

## FAQ

### How accurate is the U.S. Navy method?

Within about 3-4% of a DEXA scan for most adults. Less accurate for very lean or very obese individuals, and for people with unusual muscle/fat distribution. Use it for trends over time, not a single measurement.

### Where do I measure each circumference?

Neck: just below the Adam's apple, tape horizontal. Waist: for men, at the navel; for women, at the narrowest point above the belly button and below the ribs. Hip (women only): at the widest point of the buttocks.

### How do body fat categories differ for men and women?

Essential fat is higher for women (10-13% vs 2-5% for men) because of reproductive hormones. Athletes run 6-13% (men) or 14-20% (women). The "fitness" range is 14-17% (men) or 21-24% (women). Average: 18-24% (men), 25-31% (women).
